The FreeBSD GNOME team proudly presents GNOME 3.14 and Cinnamon 2.2.
Gnome 3.14.1 and Cinnamon 2.2.16 are supported on FreeBSD 9.3-RELEASE and up.
This commit removes the old GNOME 2 desktop, bindings and some ports that
can't be compiled. A few ports where updated to more recent versions to
allow them to compile with this update.
Apart from updating ports to newer versions
GDM is more integrated with gnome-shell now, and handles several things for
the GNOME desktop such as screen locking. If you want to use GNOME 3 via
startx, you will have to add your own lock screen/screensaver. For example
xscreensaver
can be used for sessions started without GDM.
Shell Extensions can be installed via https://extensions.gnome.org/ , we have
ported a few that can't be installed via this way.
The old gnome-utils and gnome-games ports where split up into single ports
and where converted to meta-ports.
gnome-terminal requires a UTF-8 locale to run, gdm handles this already, but
if you use startx you need to do this yourself.
Upgrade instructions:
Delete the old and conflicting packages:
# pkg delete clutter gnome-utils gnome-panel gnome-keyring vala-vapigen \
guile gcalctool gnome-media libgnomekbd
# pkg delete gnome-screensaver gnome-applets bug-buddy evolution-exchange \
evolution-webcal gnome-system-tools seahorse-plugins gnome-control-center
For package users the following lines will be enough:
# pkg upgrade
# pkg install gnome3
For ports users should do the following:
# portmaster -a
# portmaster x11/gnome3
We are currently aware of two issues. The first issue is a bug in the
file monitoring code in the glib20 port. This bug causes glib programs
to crash when files in a monitored directory are added or removed.
Upstream is aware of the problem, but since the problem is quite complex
there is no solution yet. This problem isn't restricted to BSD.
The second issue is that on certain video cards totem will display a
purple/pink overlay on the video. It not clear yet where the issues
comes from.
Major thanks goes to Gustau Perez for being a driving force behind getting
GNOME 3 up to speed again. Also thanks to Antoine Brodin for running the
exp-runs.

Presenting GNOME 2.30.1 for FreeBSD. The offical release notes for this

This release brings initial PackageKit support, Upower (replaces power
management part of hal), cuse4bsd integration with HAL and cheese, and a
faster Evolution.
Sadly GNOME 2.30.x will be the last release with FreeBSD 6.X support. This
will also be the last of the 2.x releases. The next release will be the
highly-anticipated GNOME 3.0 which will bring with it a new UI experience.
Currently, there are a few bugs with GNOME 2.30 that may be of note for our
users. Be sure to consult the UPGRADING note or the 2.30 upgrade FAQ at

Presenting GNOME 2.28.1 for FreeBSD. The official release notes for this
release can be found at http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.28/ .
Officially, this is mostly a polishing release in preparation for GNOME 3.0
due in about a year.
On the FreeBSD front, though, a lot went into this release. Major thanks
goes to kwm and avl who did a lot of the porting work for this release.
In particular, kwm brought in Evolution MAPI support for better Microsoft
Exchange integration. Avl made sure that the new gobject introspection
repository ports were nicely compartmentalized so that large dependencies
aren't brought in wholesale.
But, every GNOME team member (ahze, avl, bland, kwm, mezz, and myself)
contributed to this release.
Other major improvements include an updated HAL with better volume
probing code, ufsid integration, and support for volume names containing
spaces (big thanks to J.R. Oldroyd); a new WebKit; updated AbiWord;
an updated Gimp; and a preview of the new GNOME Shell project (thanks to
Pawel Worach).
The FreeBSD GNOME Team would like to that the following additional
contributors to this release whose patches and testing really helped
make it a success:

Dominique Goncalves
Eric L. Chen

Presenting GNOME 2.20.1 and all related works for FreeBSD. The official
GNOME 2.20 release notes can be found at
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.20/notes/en/ . Beyond that, this update
includes the new GIMP 2.4 (courtesy of ahze).
The GNOME 2.20 update also includes a huge change in the FreeBSD GNOME
hierarchy. We are now using the more standard DATADIR of ${PREFIX}/share
rather than ${PREFIX}/share/gnome. The result is that fewer patches and
hacks are needed to port GNOME components to FreeBSD. This will mean some
user changes may be required, so be sure to read /usr/ports/UPDATING for
more details.
This release and the things we accomplished in it would not have been
possible without mezz's crazy idea to collapse DATADIR, and his persistence
to make it happen successfully. Ahze and pav also deserve thanks for
their work on porting modules and testing the whole ball of wax on
pointyhat (respectively).

Presenting GNOME 2.18 for FreeBSD. GNOME 2.18 is a departure from recent GNOME
releases in that it focuses more on stability and functionality than on
new features. Not that it doesn't have its share of new and exciting
items. See http://www.gnome.org/start/2.18/ for all the goodies in

Presenting GNOME 2.16.1 for FreeBSD. This release represents a massive
amount of work by the FreeBSD GNOME Team and our testers.
On top of the usual GNOME update, we have taken this opportunity to move
GNOME from X11BASE to LOCALBASE. This means roughly 600 ports NOT part of
the GNOME Desktop also need to be changed. The bulk of the move was carried
out by ahze, mezz, and pav, but it would not have been possible without
cooperation from the FreeBSD KDE team who worked with us to make sure
GNOME and KDE can still coexist happily. We would also like to send a
shout out to kris and pointyhat for putting up with multiple test runs
until we got something that was solid.
Back to GNOME 2.16. This release brings a huge amount of new functionality
to FreeBSD. The standard release notes can be read at
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.16/ . But on top of what you will read there,
jylefort and marcus have completed work on a port of HAL to FreeBSD. This
will allow FreeBSD to take advantage of closer hardware interaction such
as auto-mounting CD-ROMs, USB drives, and music players; auto-playing
audio CDs; and managing laptop power consumption.
But where would this all be without our loyal testers and contributors?

Presenting GNOME 2.14.1 for FreeBSD! Checkout
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.14/ for the official release notes, and a list
of all the gooides in this new release. In particular, GNOME 2.14 focused
on performance, and they did not miss the mark. There's some new eye candy,
but most of the big things are waiting until GNOME 2.16. On the FreeBSD
side, we tried to clean up all the crashers we could. In particular, we
really improved GNOME's 64-bit support.
The good news is that this release does not bring any big shared library
version bumps, so you can almost do a simple portupgrade to get to 2.14.
There are a few minor gotchas that will be documented in UPDATING shortly.
The FreeBSD GNOME Team would like th thank the following users for their

Presenting GNOME 2.12 for FreeBSD. The release is chock full of bug fixes
and new features. Don't believe me? Then see for yourself at
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.12/notes/en/.
DO NOT USE portupgrade by itself to upgrade to GNOME 2.12. Instead, use
the gnome_upgrade.sh script from
http://www.marcuscom.com/downloads/gnome_upgrade212.sh. This script will
circumvent some potential pitfalls users can see if they use portupgrade
by itself.
In keeping with tradition, GNOME 2.12 for FreeBSD comes with a special
splash screen. The winner of this release's contest is
Dominique Goncalves <dominique.goncalves@gmail.com>. His splash screen
was inspired by http://art.gnome.org/contests/2.12-splash/83.
The FreeBSD GNOME Team would lank to thank the following users for
their contributions to this release:
Matthew Luckie <mjl@luckie.org.nz>

sajd on #freebsd-gnome
Caelian on #freebsd-gnome

Presenting GNOME 2.10 for FreeBSD!
The release notes can be found at
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.10/notes/rnwhatsnew.html, and will give you a
good idea of what has gone into this release overall. However, a lot of
FreeBSD specific additions and fixes have been made. For example, this
release offers fixed ACPI support as well as new CPU freqeuncy monitoring
support. See the FreeBSD GNOME 2.10 upgrade page at
http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/docs/faq210.html for the entire list as well
as a list of known issues and upgrade instructions.
GNOME 2.10, as well as all of our releases, would not be possible without
the great team that goes into porting and testign each and every component.
Thanks definitely goes out to ahze, adamw, bland, kwm, mezz, and pav for all
their work. We would also like to thank our adventurous users that chose to
ride the walrus. We'd especially like to thank the following users that
provided patches for GNOME 2.10:
ade
Yasuda Keisuke
Franz Klammer
Khairil Yusof
Radek Kozlowsk
And anyone else I may have accidentally omitted.
As with GNOME 2.8, 2.10 comes with a brand-spankin' new splashscreen
courtesy of Franz Klammer. However, unlike GNOME 2.8, we've included all
of the FreeBSD GNOME splashscreen entries with gnomesession. You can
use the deskutils/splashsetter port to choose the one you like best.
As always, GNOME users should _not_ use portupgrade alone to upgrade to
2.10. Instead, get the gnome_upgrade.sh script from
http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/gnome_upgrade.sh.
Enjoy!

Presenting GNOME 2.8 for FreeBSD (2.8.1 to be exact).
This release notes detailing all of the new goodies in GNOME 2.8 can
be found at http://www.gnome.org/start/2.8/notes/, and the list of what
was fixed in GNOME 2.8.1 can be found at
http://lists.gnome.org/archives/gnome-announce-list/2004-October/msg00056.html.
This release, as well as all of our others, would not have been possible
without the great efforts of our FreeBSD GNOME Team. The list of
current members can be found at http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/contact.html
(including our newest member, Michael Johnson <ahze@FreeBSD.org>).
Special thanks also goes out to all of the loyal FreeBSD GNOME users that
put up with crashes and hangs to test and debug GNOME on FreeBSD. We would
especially like to thank those users that provided patches for GNOME 2.7 and
2.8:
Franz Klammer <klammer@webonaut.com>
Piotr Smyrak <piotr.smyrak@heron.pl>
Radek Kozlowski <radek@raadradd.com>
Khairil Yusof <kaeru@pd.jaring.my>
Yasuda Keisuke <kysd@po.harenet.ne.jp>
Tom McLaughlin <tmclaugh@sdf.lonestar.org>
Vladimir Grebenschikov <vova@fbsd.ru>
GNOME 2.8 also features a new, FreeBSD-specific splashscreen that
was designed by jimmac for GNOME 2.8, then daemonized by
Franz Klammer <klammer@webonaut.com> and Radek Kozlowski
<radek@raadradd.com>.
As with GNOME 2.6, you cannot just "portupgrade" to GNOME 2.8. There is
a script provided at http://www.marcuscom.com/downloads/gnome_upgrade28.sh
that will aid in the upgrade process. Full documentation on the GNOME 2.8
upgrade is coming following this commit.
From all of us at FreeBSD GNOME, ENJOY!

Use the new GConf handling policy, this will be required for GNOME 2.7/2.8 or
those ports will not work. Please see the more detail about this:
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-gnome/2004-June/007253.html
Also, please check http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/porting.html for the

Convert all core GNOME1 components and some of the most popular GNOME1
apps to bsd.gnomeng.mk. The goal is to make GNOME1 framework more modular,
which will allow to use GNOME1 apps with GNOME2 desktop as well as considerably
reduce langht of dependency chains for GNOME1 ports (for example after this
commit AbiWord's dependency chain was reduced by 7 ports from 57 to only
50, while Gnumeric's - from 60 to 53 and so on).
The most of the GNOME1 apps are still not converted, so that lot of work is
still ahead.
Please report any unusual problems to gnome@FreeBSD.org.

Update to 0.12. Unfortunately it still doesn't work, even with fixed oaf,
however it goes further that earlier and instead of hanging solidly at startup
tries to launch its components, but goes kaboom (i.e. sig 12) and dies in
agony. Therefore, brave souls with loaded debuggers are welcome to fix this
